I have began looking into colours and how the work with my illustrations I want to keep them quite toned though yet thought it would be nice to incorporate the colours from the best selling shoes. By these experiments I think there far to bold and wont be using the colour range in this manner yet may be able to use the information gathered with something else wether its colour of stocks or possibly the stickers to attach posters together a very plain set of designs with brightly coloured stickers would look really modern could define the sections of the store...EG red-skate blue-surf etc
Couours int he right are completely fitting with the vans brand the burgundy and blues work well together maybe change the opacity so they are less bold and vibrant and use them within layout and titles. Male range is perfect!
FOR THE CRIT
I needed to move my project on a little further so i have began by starting some products therefore I can show them just to show style of work which Im presenting this is the net which Im using slightly modified for a voucher card. The type on pack is hand drawn using internet fonts as inspiration. I think hand drawn gives a much more relax feel to the brand yet can still look contemporary and up market.
I mocked up examples of the bright stickers idea yet I dont think they really show my visions I need to purchase some really high end stock and colours need to be brighter! Lots more work really needs to be put into this
The designs are for labels for a shoe care product which would be placed on/behind the till availabe when you buy shoes. Could have offers on things like this
After really critic my work I have decided to try out something more type and layout driven adding my illustrations to see how its really working out and to be honest I think its a much better move to take I think the best way to promote surf is through the skate therefore Im going to keep the look book for the skate but add the surf adverts to it as well as promotional posters and some information on the designs of products for the surf line. After thinking about the appropriateness of the line for in the UK there is a very specific audience and many of them who skate will be interested but skating is now so widely spread it is much more accessible being skate park added to most of the area parks. Yet because They like the brand they would be interested in the shoes t-shirts and other merchandise therefore my thoughts are to add a small clothing section to the store and promote this...It helps to place the thought of surfing into customers heads and having information readily available to access such as where the surfing competitions are through ads in the look books and magazines.
I really love the colours for this ads and the type is clean cut and modern I think in a layout spread with some black and white imagery look fantastic. Colour will be the most influential as vans are the new (in-thing) for teenagers and the bright colours and contrast are a real selling factor.
I have got to be cautious with my paisley influenced designs as they are starting to over power the original message i need to tone thm right down make smaller or less of them yet was good way to see the colours on black and white. Quite excited to start a layout now!
Looking at poster layouts and how I can take things across a range of media as I need to create a range of things the designs need to be compatible with size stock.
Change of a typeface to try and have a little more casual collective mood ive added a few different typefaces. I think they work together yet just for an inside spread maybe not striking enough to sell yet visually intriguing.
Tried layouts to fit vouchers cards etc nice and coours are fitting need to try a few more maybe a little too feminine when the main target sector is male. There iis only a small sector of the store which is female clothing and many of the shoes are unisex.
Looking at stocks I think parcel paper just isnt quite fiiting with the designs they need to be much more up market high end stock possible use of printing proccesses to be used.

Vans
Promotion for Vans for surf line of shoes under the theme of endless summer.
From this brief I want to explore my illustration skills experiment with hand drawn type and image.
Looking at the current surf section of the vans company it very much sits on its own nothing is related to the skate, I need to look at design techniques that they use and improve the similarities between them both to hopefully promote and make the surf and well known as the skate.
Current collaborators with the company look at designing t-shirst and limited edition shoes skins. I need to look at a big branding slogan/image which can familiarise the right target audience to achieve this i will be designing promotional posters possibly look at an event hosting... air freshners cars key rings in store graphics.

Initial DesignsIm looking at type and colour mainly.I think type is appropriate for the context yet still appears very lighthearted I need a way to make my designs look more corporate almost and still contain illustration really struggling with this brief at the moment. Alothough I like the poster designs it still requires to answer a brief and be perfect to fit in with clients previous work and standard of products it has built up to present.Things to do:
- Look into layout/look book for vans? possibly
- Colour is it appropriate does it send out message of surf wear?
- Think about products I am producing!

To start this brief off ive been looking at ways to illustrate surf without being too literate and obvious Ive started with doing illustrations representing waves and some under the see creatures to add to the linear drawings. when placing them together though ive been having a little diffuculty and think if i want to work in this way I need to draw the actual final thing as I want it to appear. Hard to piece little parts together as its so fluid.
I also started experimenting with some type to see it it works digital with hand drawn im a little unsure unless I have planes separating the two such as in a window display so ne would appear on the window and one be the backdrop. I like thinking in this manner as Im working to the requirements of where im designing for as appose to designing then applying to wherever fits.
What to test:
- WHere they require graphics? Look in store.
- What im designing for?
- Does the style fit with the store and original graphics for skate sector etc
- Colour?
- Are the graphics High end enough biggest brand in skate!
