Vans
Promotion for Vans for surf line of shoes under the theme of endless summer.
From this brief I want to explore my illustration skills experiment with hand drawn type and image.
Looking at the current surf section of the vans company it very much sits on its own nothing is related to the skate, I need to look at design techniques that they use and improve the similarities between them both to hopefully promote and make the surf and well known as the skate.
Current collaborators with the company look at designing t-shirst and limited edition shoes skins. I need to look at a big branding slogan/image which can familiarise the right target audience to achieve this i will be designing promotional posters possibly look at an event hosting... air freshners cars key rings in store graphics.

Initial DesignsIm looking at type and colour mainly.I think type is appropriate for the context yet still appears very lighthearted I need a way to make my designs look more corporate almost and still contain illustration really struggling with this brief at the moment. Alothough I like the poster designs it still requires to answer a brief and be perfect to fit in with clients previous work and standard of products it has built up to present.Things to do:
- Look into layout/look book for vans? possibly
- Colour is it appropriate does it send out message of surf wear?
- Think about products I am producing!

To start this brief off ive been looking at ways to illustrate surf without being too literate and obvious Ive started with doing illustrations representing waves and some under the see creatures to add to the linear drawings. when placing them together though ive been having a little diffuculty and think if i want to work in this way I need to draw the actual final thing as I want it to appear. Hard to piece little parts together as its so fluid.
I also started experimenting with some type to see it it works digital with hand drawn im a little unsure unless I have planes separating the two such as in a window display so ne would appear on the window and one be the backdrop. I like thinking in this manner as Im working to the requirements of where im designing for as appose to designing then applying to wherever fits.
What to test:
- WHere they require graphics? Look in store.
- What im designing for?
- Does the style fit with the store and original graphics for skate sector etc
- Colour?
- Are the graphics High end enough biggest brand in skate!
